Strategies of Confrontation – Conflict and Performance

22/06/25

In this workshop, we explore confrontation as a vital part of our feminist and activist practice. How do we deal with the tensions, contradictions, and conflicts that shape our relationships—with ourselves, our friends, political opponents, and the environments we inhabit? Together, we share experiences and practical strategies for navigating conflict—ranging from escalation to dialogue, from respect to insistence.

The workshop offers space to reflect on personal and political conflicts, to talk about frustration, and to experiment with different methods of confrontation. We ask: Who defines what is “rational”? How can we remain in conflict without breaking connection? And how do we use confrontation not as a barrier, but as a tool for transformation and understanding?

F*MAP:
Curating and exhibiting feminist spatial practices”

28/05/25 - currently

Seminar & exhibition Project | Chair of architectural History and curatorial Practice, TU Munich

Architecture isn’t neutral. It determines who belongs and who doesn’t, reflecting and reinforcing systems of power and inequality. Universities, as spaces of knowledge production, often uphold these hierarchies, shaping how we are taught to think about and practice architecture. But there’s a shift happening.

In recent years, students and researchers at TUM’s Department of Architecture have been rethinking how space is designed, taught, and inhabited. Through design studios, seminars, and independent projects, many have questioned dominant narratives and imagined alternative spatial futures. However, these works often remain scattered, hidden, or disconnected.

F*Map is a collective curatorial experiment to surface and connect these practices. Together, we are creating a Counter-Culture Map, a living archive of projects that open up space for multiple architectural narratives.

The seminar culminates in an exhibition at the Women in Architecture Festival 2025 (23–28 June, Vorhoelzer Forum), curated by the students themselves. Rather than applying a fixed curatorial vision, the process is open-ended and participatory: students will explore feminist approaches to storytelling, spatial display, and collective authorship.

*innen Räume

As part of the exhibition *innenRäume, organized by the collective unfairblümt at KÖŞK, we created a spatial installation combined with a performance. The exhibition explored social and structural injustices in both architectural and digital spaces. From a queer-feminist perspective, it featured artworks, workshops, and lectures.

Our contribution focused on the kitchen as a site of "Cap" (urban slang for lying, especially without reason; like, why would you even say that?). We interpret "Cap" as something false or inauthentic, a kind of pretending, deceiving, or lying to ourselves. In this context, the microwave became the "Cap Kitchen."

Additionally, we delved into the topic through texts and images, which were also presented as part of the performance.

parity jour fixe n.34: feminist spatial practice

On November 18, 2024, SOFT and Parity TUM Architecture hosted the 34th edition of the Parity Jour Fixe at the Vorhoelzer Forum, delving into the question: “What are Feminist Spatial Practices?” The event brought together diverse activist perspectives from within academia to reflect on space, spatial production, and architectural practice.

Centered around a student-led open call curated by SOFT, the evening featured short lectures and a round table discussion with our guests. We were excited to welcome Bernadette Krejs (TU Wien, Claiming*Spaces) and the feminist collective girls can scan – represented by Eszter Hegedüs, Lilla Kammermann, and Lilla Luca Varga. Together, we explored their ongoing work and discussed how feminist engagement can challenge and transform architectural practices – both within academic institutions and in the built environment.

We were honored to be invited to the studio of Frauen Bauen München to present our work, and later asked to contribute our thoughts to the series of interviews for the Frauen Bauen exhibition in munich. The Frauen Bauen Project researches and archives female architects and their projects in munich. Research was done through a series of seminars and a studio project that curated and planned the final exhibition at the “Architekturbunker” in Munich.

Please explore the complete Frauen Bauen Project under this link and enjoy listening to our thoughts.

Recognizing the lack of clear, accessible resources for students facing sexual harassment and assault at the university, we developed and distributed an unofficial yet formal-looking information sheet across campus. Designed to resemble an official university document, the paper compiled essential contacts, reporting pathways, and support services—information that should be easily available but often isn’t.

This quiet intervention aimed to both fill a critical gap and prompt institutional accountability. By placing the sheets in studios, restrooms, hallways, and common areas, we sought to raise awareness, spark conversation, and ensure that those affected by harassment know they are not alone—and that support is available. Simular informations are also avaiable at the Arch. Fachschaftswebsite.

*innen

In response to the Bavarian government's 2024 decree banning the use of gender-inclusive language at universities, SOFT created a protest banner featuring the suffix “*innen”, a visual and linguistic act of resistance. The decree, which prohibits forms of inclusive language such as gender asterisks, underscores a broader restriction on linguistic diversity and efforts toward equity in academic spaces.

By displaying the banner prominently within the university, this intervention challenged the erasure of marginalized identities in language and took a clear stand for gender justice, self-determination, and the right to inclusive expression in education.

parity jour fixe n.29: code of studio

In the summer of 2023, students, professors and staff of the TU Munich got together for the final step on drafting the collaborative document “Code of Studio”. This initiative reflects on the culture of architectural studios and asks how we might reimagine them as spaces of equity, care, and sustainability. It proposes a holistic framework for working. One that supports students and instructors as individuals, fosters institutional well-being, and considers environmental responsibility as a central concern.

The day featured key contributions from Torsten Lange, Uta Leconte, and Meike Schalk, each offering critical perspectives on pedagogy and practice. A participatory workshop followed, bringing together students, faculty, and staff from the TUM Department of Architecture to reflect, respond, and contribute to the ongoing development of the code.

EXISTENZMAXIMUM Palace of Un/learning

We were invited, alongside the “Chair of Unlearning” and the “Draglab,” to be visitors at the final exhibition of the Palace of Unlearning – Studio, led by Bernadette Krejs and Max Utech.

The students guided us through the exhibition and shared their projects with us. Each of us visitors presented our previous projects, interventions, and learned insights. Afterwards, with everyone present, we had a reflective conversation on studio experience, the presented works and strategies of activism within the university.

ARCHITECTURE DISCRIMINATES! / guest lecture @ ACE new European bauhaus: upskilling x
(education + practice)

03/04/23

At the ACE–EAAE Conference “Upskilling × Education × Practice”, held in the context of the New European Bauhaus initiative, SOFT contributed a key input focused on the structural exclusions embedded within architectural education and practice. Under the provocation “Why does architecture discriminate?”, we presented our ongoing work that challenges normative standards in architectural culture—standards that often reproduce inequality through hierarchies of knowledge, gendered assumptions, and inaccessible modes of working.

By sharing insights from our interventions—ranging from protest actions and pedagogical experiments to support systems and care-based initiatives—we called for a fundamental rethinking of how architecture is taught, practiced, and valued. Our contribution emphasized the urgency of centering equity, embodied knowledge, and collective responsibility in the transformation of architectural institutions.
